Munro or Monro or Munroe  or Monroe - Irish / Mheic an Rothaich. (Descended from a son of Rothach) A Heremonian Ui Cobhthaigh Dal Cuinn "Northern" Ui Niaill Cenel Conaill Sept / Family branch, who had their original territory at the bun / mun the mouth of the River Roe in Co. Derry in the north - east of the Ulster Province. From there in the 11th Century AD they migrated across the Irish Sea to the Scottish Highlands to support the Scottish Heremonian King of Argyle (The Land of the Gael) and settled around Ross / Roff where they were granted territory by him for assisting to defeat the Vikings. In 1126 AD Hugh Munro of Foules was their leader. By the Mid - 14th Century AD they were on the north shore of the Cromarty Firth at Ferindonald / "Donald's Land" - named for there original Chief and from the region of Alness and Kiltearn they spread to the east and the north into Easter Ross. There they held their territory as the vassals of the Earls of Ross who later had their lands there forfeited to the Crown and they then held them personally subject to the Crown. Robert Foulis supported Robert Bruce at Bannockburn. Robert Munro supported the Catholic Queen, Mary Queen of Scots and held Dingwell Castle. Their Chief later became non - Catholic to hold onto their territory there and due to their long time commitment to the Crown they fought on the Continent in the 30 Years War supporting the non - Catholic succession to the British Crown against the Catholic Stuart during the 18th Century AD. A Heremonian Ui Laoghaire Ui Lughaidh Cu Corb  Ui Cheinnselaig Sept / Family branch also anglicized as Hy Felimy who had their territory at Ballaghkeen in Co. Wexford in the south - east of Southern Leinster where they were Chiefs and Kings. They are descended directly from *111.Murrough / Murchad the 51a King of Leinster and were originally descended from *84.Cu "Corb" the ancestor of the Kings of Leinster through his descendant *92.Enda / Enna "Cennsalach" the 4th Century AD 2nd King of Leinster. Among their other Septs where the Kavanaghs, the Kinsellas and the Mac Davy Mores. The Mac Murrough seats where at Morriscastle / O Murchu’s / Toberlamina, Oulart and Oularteigh. Their last Chief to be inaugurated was Murtough in 1461 AD and they survived until the 16th Century AD when Donnell "Mor" O Morchoe was overthrown and nearly all of their territory Confiscated also by the English. They were then scattered in to Co. Carlow and Co. Kilkenny in Southern Leinster with one Sept still surviving in Oularteigh. The name O Morchoe is used by the Murphy Chief in Co. Wexford.
