O Martin - Irish / Ua Martain. A Sept / Family branch, who had their territory in Co. Westmeath in the south - west of Northern Leinster in the 16th Century AD.

O Martin or O Martins - Irish / Ua Martain. An Irian Conmaicne Cuile Toladh Sept / Family branch, who had their territory at Kilmaine in Co. Mayo in the mid - west of the Connacht Province and nearby in the north of Co. Galway in the south - west of the Connacht Province. Kinsmen to O Toleran, O Martin / O Martins.  Ancestors - *Finnchaem (Traech mheic Causcraid / Fraech mheic Cuscraigh), *Cumscrach / Cumascrach, *37.Ir (Irians).

Martin. Used to abbreviate Gilmartin, which see.

Mac Martin or Mac Gilmartin - Irish / Mheic Ghiolla Mhartain. (Descended from a son of the follower of St. Martin) A Heremonian Ui Cobhthaigh Dal Cuinn "Northern" Ui Niaill Cenel nEogain Sept / Family branch, whose territory was at Clogher in Co. Tyrone in Central Ulster and nearby in Co. Fermanagh in the south - west of the Ulster Province. They were driven out to Co. Sligo and Co. Leitrim in Northern Connacht. Ancestors - *88.Eogan the 1st King of Aileach (Cenel nEogain), *87.Niall of the Nine Hostages the 126th King of Tara / Ireland (Ui Niall).

Martin. Anglo Norman origins. They came with the Anglo - Norman Invasion and ruled as Chiefs around Bally na Hinch Loch and Connemara Loch, in Co. Galway in Southern Connacht. They were one of the "14 Foreign Tribes of Galway." The English King, Charles 11 after the English Restoration gave them 250,000 acres of the land of Ui Briuin Seola O Flahertys who where then the Kings of West / Iar Connacht at Ballynahinch. The Martins were then one of the wealthiest families in Co. Galway up until the Great Famine with their main residence at Ross House beside the shore of Ross Lake. During the Great Famine Thomas Martin and Mary his daughter spent the Family fortune on trying to give relief, which bankrupted them. Their family home still exists at Ballynahinch.

O Marum. May be the Irish / Ua Marum.  A Sept / Family branch, who had their territory in the Heremonian Ui Laoghaire Ui Connla kingdom of Ossory in Co. Kilkenny in the south - west of Southern Leinster in 1690 AD. Kieran Marum was one of the Bishops of Ossory.

Marward. English Barons. They were in Co. Meath in the south - east of Northern Leinster.

Mason. English occupational name. They have been in Ireland since the 13th Century AD but most are descended from only recent arrivals. Mainly now found in the Leinster Province, the Munster Province and the Ulster Province.

Massey. English Barons. They were at Clarina in Co. Limerick in the mid - north - west of the Munster Province.

Mac Master - Irish / Mheic a n Mhaighistir. (Descended from a son of the Master) A Heremonian Ui Cobhthaigh Dal Cuinn Ui Briuin Sept / Family branch who were a Sept of the Mac Kiernans, which see, who had their territory in Co. Longford in the north - west of Northern Leinster. Many changed to Masterson, which see. Ancestors - *87.Brion the original 1st King of Connacht (Ui Briuin), *86.Eochy "Mugmedon" the 124th King of Tara / Ireland.

Masterson. Used as a synonym for Mac Master, which see.

Masterson. English origins. They were in Co. Wexford in the south - east of Southern Leinster in the 16th Century AD and in Co. Cavan  in Southern Ulster.

Mac Math. Highland Scottish origins. A Sept / Family branch of the Mathesons who were in the Ulster Province in the 17th Century AD. Known as Mac Meath in Co. Monaghan in Southern Ulster. Mac Magh and Mac Maugh were also used as variants. See also - Mac Mawe.

O Mathain - Irish / Ua Mathain. A Sept / Family branch, who had their territory in Co. Longford in the north - west of Northern Leinster.

Mather or Mathers - mather / mower. English origins. They came from Yorkshire known there as Mather and known as such in Co. Dublin in the north - east of Southern Leinster since the 17th Century AD and later in Co. Armagh in the south - east of the Ulster Province. Mathers used in Ulster. Also changed to Mathews in Co. Down in the south - east of Ulster.

Mathew. English origins. Fr. Theobold Mathew was from Thomastown in Co. Tipperary in the north - east of the Munster Province.

Matthews. English origins. They were in the Ulster Province and Co. Louth in the north - east of Northern Leinster. Used also as synonym for Mac Mahon, which see, there.

O Mattimoe or O Milmoe - Irish / Ua Maol Mhuadh / Molloy a derivative. A Heremonian Ui Cobhthaigh Dal Cuinn Ui Briuin Siol Muiredaigh / Sil Murray Sept  Family branch, who had their territory in Co. Roscommon in the east of the Connacht Province. O Millamoe and O Mallimoe were used as transition forms from O Milmoe to O Mattimoe. Ancestors - *97.Murray / Muiredach the 18th King of Connacht (*Ui Muiredaig), *96. Fergus / Muirgius, *95.Reilly / Rogallach the 12th King of Connacht Ui Briuin Ai), *87.Brion the original 1st King of Connacht (Ui Briuin), *86.Eochy "Mugmedon" the 124th King of Tara / Ireland.

Maturin. French Huguenot origins -

Maude or Maud. They were among the Irish speakers in the Connemara in the west of Co. Galway in Southern Connacht.
