A Heremonian Ui Cobhthaigh Dal Cuinn Ui Briuin Sept / Family branch descended from 87.Brion the original 1st King of Connacht through his son, 88.Orbison who is the direct ancestor of the O Malleys. They were Chiefs and Kings of the Fir Umaille / Hy Malia in Co. Mayo in the mid - west of the Connacht Province who had their fortress there on Clare Island. In 1244 AD they founded a Carmelite Friary on Clare Island, which is still there and Murrisk Abbey on the southern shores of Clew Bay and their O Malley Tomb is still there. In 1536 AD Grace / Grannia O Malley was the Pirate Queen, whose father was Owen "Dhub Dara" / Black Oak O Malley the Lord of the Isles. At 15 year of age Grace married "The O Flaherty" / Donnell O Flaherty who was also a Pirate and the 1st Chieftain of the Ui Briuin Seola O Flaherties of Bally na Hinch who was eventually killed in battle. She had her stronghold at Carrigahooly Castle on Clare Island there near Newport. Mayo were it had been previously built by the Burkes. It passed to Grace O Malley who put in her followers there during her year of marriage to Richard Burke. Inishturk Island and Inishboffin Island together with Clare Island were all part of Grace O Malleys territory.
