They were especially well known in literature, and the militarily in Ireland and as "Wild Geese" abroad. Art O Leary who served as a sea captain in the Hungarian Army under Marie Therese shipped his mare back to Co. Cork where he won the local hunt and Morris a non - Catholic magistrate claimed her for 5 pounds under the Irish Penal Laws introduced by the English, but he drove him off with his riding crop. Morris then proceeded to have Art outlawed and shot dead and Art’s wife who was Daniel O Connell "The Liberator's" aunt pursued those who shot him and had them transported.
