Mac Gannon - Irish / Mag Fhionnain - fionn / fair. An old Erris Sept / Family branch, who had their territory in Co. Mayo in the the mid - west of the Connacht Province.

Mac Gannon - Irish / Mag Canann. Old Erris Sept / Family branch, who had their territory in Co. Clare in Thomond / Tuaiscert Mhumhain / Northern Munster. See also Mac Connon.

Ganter / le Gaunter / glove maker - Anglo Norman origins. They were in Dublin in the north - east of Southern Leinster during Medieval Times.

O Gara - Irish / Ui Gara / Ua Ghadhra - gadhar / dog. A Heberian Cianachta Ui Luigni Sept / Family branch, who had their original territory in Co. Sligo in the north - west of the Connacht Province where they were Kings. They were also nearby in Co. Mayo and Co. Roscommon and where the Chiefs of Luigni Connacht at Loch Gara in Co. Roscommon and Co. Sligo and were also the Chiefs of Coolavin up until 1650 AD. Their Ui Luigni territory was between Loch Gara and the Ox Mountains and they had their Moygara Castle at Gorteen in Co. Sligo and were kinsmen to the O Haras in Leyney / Luigni. Descended from *85.Cian the third son of *84.Ailill "Olomm" the 1st King of Munster, who was also the ancestor of many other Cianachta Families throughout Ireland. His son, *86.Teague / Tadhg mac Cian is also the ancestor of the O Carrolls of Ely, the O Reardons and the O Haras as well as the O Garas and many of the Heberian Families in the east of Co. Meath in the south - east of Northern Leinster. From *85.Cian descend the aristocratic Eile Sept, the Cianachta Sept, the Gailenga Sept and the Ui Luigni Sept along with many others. Because of this widespread kinship it was a crime for any of the Heberian Eoghanachts of Munster descending from his brother 85.Eoghan "Mor" to kill any of the Creraige from the Tuath / Family region of the Corco Mruad Sept in the north - west of Co. Garavan. Used as a variant for Garvin, which see, in Co. Mayo in the mid - west of the Connacht Province.

Garde. They were in the east of Co. Cork in Southern Munster and came from Kent in the 17th Century AD. See also Uniacke.

Garland / Gearnuin. Originally Gernon. They have been in Co. Monaghan in Southern Ulster and nearby in Co. Louth in the north - east of Northern Leinster since Roger de Gernon came with Strongbow during the Anglo - Norman Invasion in 1170 AD. See also Mac Gartlan.

Mac Garrahan or Mac Garraghan - Irish / Mag Arachain. A Sept / Family branch, who had their original territory in Co. Fermanagh in the south - west of the Ulster Province and were later nearby in Co. Cavan in Southern Ulster and nearby in Co. Leitrim in Northern Connacht.

Mac Garraher - Irish / Mag Fhearchair - fear char / dear man. A Sept / Family branch, who had their territory in Co. Donegal in the north - west of the Ulster Province and were later in Co. Roscommon in the east of the Connacht Province.

Mac Garrahy. Used as a variant especially for Mac Garrihy, which see but also used for Mac Geraghty, which see, in Co. Offaly in the north - west of Southern Leinster.

Garrett / Gairead. Garrett’s Castle was at Mount Garret in Co. Wexford in the south - east of Southern Leinster and Urlingford Castle in Co. Kilkenny in the south - west of Southern Leinster. The actual home of the Mountgarrets was nearby on the Co. Tipperary border in the north - east of the Munster Province.

Garrett. English origins. Also used as a synonym for Fitz Gerald, which see. Most are now to be found in the north - east of the Ulster Province.

Ancestors - *87.Brion the original 1st King of Connacht (Ui Briuin), *86.Eochy "Mugmedon" the 124th King of Tara / Ireland..
