Mac Cogan - Irish / Mheic Cogadhain / Mheic Acadhain - cucogaidh (Descended from a son of the hound or warrior of war.)  An Irian Conmaicne Magh Rein Clann Fermaighe Sept / Family branch of the Clann Cellachain, Clann Mael Samhna, Clann Taebhachain, Clann Ubhan, Clann Lughann, Clann Uanan who had their territory at Glenfarne / Cloonclare at Dromahaire and Rosclogher in Co. Leitrim in Northern Connacht, who were also in Co. Laois in the mid - west of Southern Leinster. Ancestor: *37.Ir (Irians).

Cogan or Coggan / de Cogan. Welsh toponymic. Anglo Norman origins . Came into Ireland from Wales during the Anglo - Norman Invasion with Strongbow / Richard de Clare in the 12th Century AD. They were in Co. Cork in Desmond / Southern Munster as English Lords and later some changed their name to Gogan and Goggin. It was also used as a synonym for Coogan, which see. See also Cogavin.
