GINKGO / Maiden Hair Fern Tree / Ginkgo biloba. Ginkgoaceae. N.B: Overdosing could create Diarrhoea, Irritability & Restlessness. N.B: Do not use if Pregnant or Breast Feeding. N.B: Extract or Capsules 60 - 240mg a day - Tincture: 3ml - 4ml a day - no more then this.

    Cultivation: A deciduous golden coloured slow - growing plant in Autumn that requires a cool climate and has fan shaped notched Leaves resembling the Maidenhair Fern in a well - drained, fertile soil. Grown from seed taken from the ripe fruit that falls from the trees that require a male and female tree planted together and the subsequent plum - like Fruit has an unpleasant smell producing a seed resembling an Almond, which can be baked, boiled or roasted before being cracked open. Harvest the Leaves and dry as they change colour in Autumn. May be also grown by grafting or taking cuttings of the semi - ripe wood in Summer.  Product: Fruits, & Leaves - medicinal) are used. 

    Used to Treat: Aging: Best to buy Capsules or Extract or blend a few Leaves in with Fruit as it improves the Blood Flow to the Brain and may assist with Alzheimer's Disease & Dementia to become more alert, sociable, think more clearly, feel better and remember more. Improves alertness, Memory, and Concentration, elevates the Mood and relieves Tinnitus - ringing in the Ears, Anxiety & Dizziness. Dosage: 60 - 240mg Extract a day. N.B: Do not take more then this as in higher doses it may cause Diarrhoea, Irritability & Restlessness. Allergies: the Leaves contain Ginkgolides that interfere with the action of a chemical produced by the Body - Platelet Activating Factor - PAF that triggers Allergies, Asthma & Inflammation. Asthma: interferes with Platelet Activating Factor, a Protein in the Blood that triggers Broncho - Spasms and contains Ginkgoloids. N.B: 50:1 Extract is best to use with a dosage of 60 - 240mg a day but no higher. N.B: In large doses Ginkgo may cause Diarrhoea, Irritability & Restlessness. Brain: Improves the Blood Flow to the Brain improving Alertness, Concentration & Memory. Cardiac - Arrhythmia: used as a Heart Tonic that improves Blood flow to the Heart and lessens Coronary demand for Oxygen reducing shortness of Breath & Chest pain. The Extracts can be bought at Health Stores using 60 - 240mg a day but no higher. N.B: Do not use high amounts as it can cause Diarrhoea, Irritability & Restlessness. Depression: may assist especially in the Elderly who suffer reduced Blood flow to the Brain. Extract: Use 60 - 240mg a day but do not go any higher as in large amounts it may cause Diarrhoea, Irritability & Restlessness. Dizziness: relieves. Hangover: contains an Enzyme that speeds up the Body's Metabolism of Alcohol. Head - Ache: improves the Cerebral Blood flow through the Brain. Extract: 30 drops of 0.5% Flavonoid Glycosides 3 times a day for a day or two. Raynard's Disease:  improves Blood Circulation especially through the Brain for recovery from Stroke and Mental slowing in the Aged. Used for Intermittent Claudication - Narrowing of the Arteries in the Legs also especially, to improve the ability to walk, a similar Condition except that it affects the Fingers instead. The medicinal part is the Leaf but the Ginkgolide activity in them is in low concentration so use Capsules or Pills made from a 50:1 ratio or try 60 - 240mg a day in Tincture. N.B: Do not go any higher with the dosage as large amounts of the herb may cause Diarrhoea, Irritability & Restlessness. Sinusitis: used for Aged infirmities particularly Stroke because it increases Blood flow in and around the Brain but it also has Respiratory benefits and is used for Sinusitis. Buy 50:1 Extract and follow package directions or you can try 60 - 240mg a day. N.B: Do not go any higher as it may cause Diarrhoea, Irritability & Restlessness. Sores: used to treat Leg Ulcers as a 50:1 Extract @ 60 - 240gm a day. N.B: Do not go any higher with the dosage as it may cause Diarrhoea Irritability & Restlessness. Tinnitus - Vertigo: relieves. 50:1 used for Aging Conditions such as Tinnitus, Vertigo, Memory Loss, & Poor Circulation. Dosage: 40mg 3 times a day for Tinnitus. Varicose Veins: is an all round Circulation booster as it increases the Blood flow through the Brain and also improves Circulation elsewhere in the Body to treat Varicose Veins. Use a 50:1 Extract with a dosage 60mg only up to 240mg daily as higher doses may cause Diarrhoea, Irritability & Restlessness. GINSENG, American / Panax quinquefolius. Araliaceae. - similar to Chinese Ginseng. Product: Roots used.

GINSENG, Chinese, Asian or Korean. / Chinese Panaca / The Gift of Gods / Panax ginseng / quinquefolium. Araliaceae - China & Mongolia.  N.B: Do not use if Pregnant or Breast Feeding. N.B; Do not take if it makes you feel agitated or develop a Head - Ache. Used mostly to give an energy boost. Only has a modest use in Detox. Actions: Anti - Depressive, Demulcent, Stomachic & Stimulant.  An effective Aphrodisiac and has no after effects and effective Tonic for the Aged & Senile. Tones the Muscles & Skin, improves Appetite restores depleted Sexual Energy. Tablets or Capsules or as a Herb Tea. 

    Cultivation: An long lived deciduous Perennial erect growing herb with branched taproots and vivid fleshy divided leaves that requires full Sun to deep shade in a well - drained soil with mild Summers and cold Winters in a slightly Acid soil. Grown by seed that is stratified - see Echinacea. Product: the Roots alone used. Capsules & Tablets also used. Harvest the Roots in Autumn from plants older then 6 years and use fresh, or peeled and dried. 

    Used to Treat: Aging: as the Phenolic compounds - Salicylic Acid, Syringic Acid & Vanillic Acid  have an Anti - Ageing effect as they inhibit Lipid Peroxide formation and slow down Tissue destruction  and the degeneration of the Cell Membranes. Appetite: improves. Blood Pressure: to reduce. Cancer: suppresses Tumour Cell development. Cholesterol: to reduce Blood levels. Chronic Fatigue Syndrome: Depression: Diabetes: as the active ingredients produce Insulin - like effects. Digestive Conditions: Fatigue: with a cup of Tea acting as a Body & Glandular balancer as it energisers the whole Body as it stimulates the Adrenals & Spleen. GINSENG, Indian / Withania somnifera / Actions: Adaptogen, Mild Sedative. Used to Treat: Anaemia: as it is high in Iron. Debilty: to recover strength. Insomnia: as a Mild Sedative. Mental Capacity: improves. Mood: improves. 

GINSENG, Japanese / Panax japonicus / used in Tonic drinks. 

GINSENG  (Siberian) Eleutherococcus senticosus. Araliaceae. Europe. NB: Long term use due to its stimulating effects could cause exhaustion. Avoid using during Pregnancy or with other stimulants. Do not take if it makes you feel agitated or develop a Head - Ache. Improves Body's ability to adapt to Stress. Less stimulating then Korean Ginseng but increases Stamina and performance, improves clarity of Mind and Concentration. Assists during periods of Stress such as exams etc. Cultivation: A deciduous shrub with thick Roots, divided Leaves and umbels of black berries. Used dried Roots. Dose: 1gr a day for short periods.  

GLOBE ARTICHOKE / Cynara scolymus - Best variety - Grande Beurre. Cultivation: A unique and delicious tall Perennial Vegetable eaten as a delicacy as it has a subtle, sweet and nutty flavour and is one of the oldest foods known to Humans. 

    Cultivation: Does best in medium to sandy loam but will grow in any well - drained soil and is easy to raise from Seed and will develop rapidly if sown directly into an open sunny spot. Plant 1 metre apart as overcrowding reduces the flower stems with the Buds appearing in early Spring and will bear before the end of Summer right up to November. 5 x Plants should be enough and if buying purchase during Autumn & Winter and they can be left in the same bed for 3 years and are especially good for the back of a flower beds. The suckers - young shoots should be detached with a piece of the old root at the base of the plant. Plant firmly and water well and they can take up to 10 days to get going. After flowering finishes keep the plants watered and mulched through Summer and in Autumn cut back to 30cm high and apply a dressing of mixed fertilizer and animal manure or mulch to maintain the soil structure. Prune back to the 5 strongest shoots in Winter for the Buds required for next Spring. The Plant will then bear well for the next 3 - 4 years and should then be divided and replanted or replace with vigorous new seedlings every 2 - 3 years. Consumption: The large fleshy - scaled Flower Bud is eaten, but do not allow the Buds to open or they will not be edible and harvest the Buds when 5 - 10cm in diameter while still tight and tender. Rinse well in cold water and cook in lightly salted water with a squeeze of Lemon Juice for 20 minutes and test the base with a skewer to determine the tenderness. Trim the base so that they stand upright and remove any tatty leaves prior to cooking. Drain the cooked Artichokes upside down in a colander and open out the top leaves and remove the spikey - little yellow leaves at the centre and the hairy choke. Underneath is the delicious heart. Serve on large plates to take the discarded leaves, which are pulled off, starting at the outside. Dip the base of each leaf into sauce and draw the leaf end through the Teeth to scrape off the edible portion then discard. Cut the Artichoke base into pieces and dip into melted Butter or serve hot with Hollandaise Sauce or cold with Vinaigrette Sauce.

    Used to Treat: Arteriosclerosis: as a Prophylactic - preventive. Cholesterol: lowers. Jaundice: for insufficiency. Liver: for insufficency. 

GLYCERINE / see Therapies. Product: A thickened, sticky, sweet - tasting clear liquid derived from Vegetable Oils.  

GOAT’S RUE / Galega / Galego officinalis. Europe. Action: One of the quickest & effective Vermifuges. Cultivation: 12" / 30 cm high member of the Pea Family. Products: Leaves & Stem used.
