The diet is either too low in Magnesium, or too high in Phosphates draining the System of Magnesium. Symptoms: Hardening Tissue around the Neck, the top of the Tail and down the Shoulder. (Not to be confused with Fat, which is Soft - You cannot stick your Fingers into a foundered Horse.) The Feet get hot with tremors passing down the Legs and unwilling to move and stands with all Feet bunched together beneath it to alleviate the pain. Build up of this hard Tissue may take weeks or months to cure. Treatment: 450kg Horse - In the short term it is relieved by a drench of 1kg of Epsom Salts - Magnesium Sulphate dissolved in as little water as possible and move the Horse about for an hour. If a Stream is handy walk the Horse in it as it gives even better relief. Further Treatment: Give 1 x Tablespoon of Epsom Salts daily for the first 3 - 4 days only, as well as 1 x Tablespoon of Magnesite or Dolomite in the Feed and after a week reduce to 1 x Dessertspoon full. Pony: 2 Doses an hour apart of 1/2 kg of Epsom Salts by drench. N.B: In the long term Epsom Salts demineralise & damage the area covering the Kidneys.
