1940 / 4 - October to December
November 5th: Winston Churchill,
the British Prime Minister, in the
British House of Commons, lambasted Eammon de Valera for not
giving him access to the Irish ports, which were closed to the British Navy, as
the
German U - Boats were giving them trouble, and if they had those Ports they could
better defend themselves, and the newspapers took up his cry,
and they began an anti - Irish Campaign in Britain.
November 7th:In
the
Irish Republic, Eamonn de Valera,
affirmed that there was no chance of Ireland
handing over the Irish
Ports to anyone, as this would only lead to loss of Ireland's
neutrality, and
further bloodshed. Winston Churchill, was well aware that if he
forced War on Ireland,
there would be
Irish - American repercussions. Instead, he appealed to Franklin Roosevelt
the American President, to try and bring pressure on the
Irish Government,
to obtain bases for America in Ireland, to protect the shipping or at least
obtain them for
Great Britain. David Gray, the American Ambassador to
Ireland,
gave Eammon de Valera a letter stating, "Nations that
are not co - operating with the British Government are regarded as
not in sympathy with the
interests of America."
One quarter of the
Irish male population, had already enlisted in the
Allied Armies, and the local
Security Forces, and Eamonn de Valera advised America that
Ireland needed
assistance, as an invasion by either Germany, threatening through shipping
blockades, or the British Government, who were threatening by words and
economic reprisals. The German Government, knowing that
Ireland was fearing an attack by the British
Government, offered to assist the Irish Government
by supplying captured weapons, similar to those in use in Ireland.
November 14th:In
the
Irish Republic,
disaffected by the
IRA, who he considered actually doing nothing
worthwhile and leaderless, and realising there wasn't anything to gain by remaining
in Ireland, Captain Hermann Goertz
/ Mr. Robinson, the German agent, escaped to
Spain to
return to Germany, going against his original orders.
November: Sir James Craig
/ Lord Craigavon, the Ascendancy
Official
Unionist leader,
had died, who had stated, "The Stormont
Parliament in the 6 Counties,
Partitioned from the Ulster Province, was for an
"Ascendancy State," and he was replaced by J.M. Andrews, as the
new Official Unionist leader, only 5 minutes after
the first
German raid
The
IRA membership in the Ulster
Province, at this time,
was very small.
December: Increasing the pressure on the
Irish
Government,
Franklin D. Roosevelt, the President of the United States of America, went on radio and warned the Irish of
an imminent invasion by Germany.
December:
The Irish Ambassador in Madrid, was informed of the fate of
Frank
Ryan. Dr. Edward Mac Lysaght, became the first Irish Chief Herald, and instituted the recognition of the Irish Chiefs of the Name, following on from the aristocratic Gaelic Irish under the Irish Brehon Laws.
Seamus Murphy's monument to the
"4 Irish Poets"
was installed in Killarney in Co. Kerry in
Southern Munster, opposite the Franciscan Friary,
and among these were Pierce Ferriter, who had been
hung by the English nearby on the Hill of Sheep in 1643 AD,
Geoffrey O Donoghue who had died in 1677 AD,
Eogan O Rahilly who had died in 1728, and
Owen "Roe"
O Sullivan who died in 1784 AD. The first
3 are interred in Muckross Abbey, where there is the
Torc Waterfall above, near Loch Leane, which is the largest of the Killarney lochs, while
Owen "Roe"
O Sullivan, who was born at Rathmore, was interred at Knocknagree on
Slieve Luachra.
