1940 / 2 - April to June
April:
In the
Irish Republic,
David Gray,
a relative of President
Roosevelt, was
appointed the
American Ambassador to
Ireland, and was to prove anti
- Irish Government and pro -
British Government, and he was to be not very discreet
in his endeavours, which often back fired on him.
April 6th:
Sean Russell
the previous leader of the Anti - Treaty IRA, was to leave
America by this date, as his bail
was to expire on 16th April.
April:
Ernst Weber - Drohl
/ Atlas the Strong,
who had been sent by the Germans to
encourage the IRA to attack British
Military targets, instead of trying to re - unite the 32 Counties of
Ireland, was
arrested in the Irish Republic as a foreign alien, but
he was allowed to carry
on his stay in Ireland,
although he was fined
3
pounds, because his story that he was seeking to find his
2 sons
from an Irish
girl checked out.
Eamonn de Valera,
the Irish Prime Minister, banned the Memorial Service
to commemorate the 1916
Easter Rising, for the first time ever,
and instead on Easter Sunday
he decided to lay
wreaths at the cemetery at
Arbour Hill Prison on the graves of those
shot by the British Imperial Government
after the 1916 Rising, which was
also attended by
Philomena Plunkett, the
daughter of
Count
Plunkett,
a
sister to
Joseph Plunkett, who was one of the
15
Irish men who
were shot in cold blood after the
Rising in their struggle for
Irish Independence.
She also had another of her brothers, presently on a hunger strike
in Mountjoy Prison, namely
Jack Plunkett, who
was on a Hunger Strike there with
5 other
IRA members, and she
heaped abuse on
Eamonn de Valera,
as a traitor to the cause of a
United
Ireland.
April 16th:
Tony Darcy,
who was on the Hunger Strike
in Mountjoy Jail,
died.
April 20th:
Oscar Pfaus,
the original
German agent, who was now back in
Germany, was visited by
Stephen Held an
Irish man of
German heritage, sent by the
IRA, and he produced his torn half
of the One Pound
Note, as originally devised by
Seamus Donovan
way back in February,
1939, to prove his credentials, and had been sent by
Stephen Hayes
now the Chief of Staff of the
IRA, to request a German
Officer be sent to
Ireland
to liaise with them.
April 25th:In
the
Irish Republic,
the
Anti - Treaty IRA
blew up a section of
Dublin Castle, were the
Irish Garda
police had their
headquarters, and
6 people were injured.
April 27th:
In the
Irish Republic,
the Fianna Fail
Government under Eamonn de Valera, now
interred
Ernst Weber - Drohl / Atlas the Strong,
but eventually he regained his freedom and remained
in Ireland for a year, trying
once again,
to get his strong act off the ground, and the
German Foreign
Office now also warned their army staff, not to
become involved with the
IRA anymore, as this would lead to friction with the
Dail
Eireann / Irish Assembly.
May 1st:
Sean Russell
the previous leader of the Anti - Treaty IRA, who had escaped from America, arrived in
Genoa travelling as a fireman on an
American Liner,
the
Washington, under an alias, where he was given a
German passport.
May
3rd:
Sean Russell
made it to
Germany. May 5th: In the Irish Republic, the Irish Fianna Fail Government under Eamonn de Valera, in an endeavour to destabilize the Anti - Treaty IRA further, now recruited 133,000 Irish men to join the local Defence Forces, in case Ireland was invaded, and there was now basically no roll for the IRA in Erie.
Captain
Hermann Goertz,
the
German contact, previously made by Francis Stuart in Germany for the
IRA,
flew to
Ireland,
and parachuted out in
Meath in the south of
Northern Leinster, although he had really intended to land
further north into
Co. Tyrone
in the 6 Counties,
Artificially Partitioned
from the 9 in the Ulster Province.
Losing his radio, during his landing, he
decided to head further south into
Co. Wicklow, instead, into the south - east of
Southern Leinster, to seek out
Mrs.
Francis Stuart
at Laragh Castle, and
was carrying English Pounds
and American Dollars for the
IRA. After
4 days
of walking for 70 miles, with no food, he reached
Laragh Castle, were he was accommodated
by Iseult Stuart and her mother, Maude Gonne, who also purchased clothes for him
in Dublin to wear, so that he would not stand out from the crowd in
Ireland. He was to be picked up by
Seamus O Donovan the next day, who took
him to
Dublin, and
3 days later he
was visited by a radio operator from
Belfast in Co. Antrim, who was not connected with the
IRA, and he then met with
Stephen Hayes
the Chief of Staff of the
IRA 3 days later. He was
taken away by the IRA to stay
with his compatriot,
Stephen Held, also of
German descent, who was also now
back in
Ireland.
May 7th: 2
In the
Irish Republic,
the Irish Garda Police, who were
delivering mail to the British
Government representative,
Sir
John Maffey, were attacked by the
IRA and wounded, and the
Irish Government under
Eamonn de Valera, fearing an outbreak of
Civil War,
offered
5,000 pounds reward for any information leading to their capture.
Captain
Hermann Goertz,
the
recently arrived German agent, met with
Stephen Hayes
the Chief of Staff of the IRA again, and demanded that he order the
IRA to stop
attacking the
Irish Government
and carrying out raids in
Eire, and tried to convince him that
the IRA was only benefiting
the British Government by
their actions. He further advised him to concentrate their efforts on the
6 Counties,
Artificially Partitioned from the
9 in the Ulster
Province, who were still under
British Government control.
May 10th:In
the
Irish Republic,
Eamonn de Valera,
was personally upset by the German
takeover of
Belgium and
Holland, and said so publicly, although he had
said nothing previously when they captured
Denmark
and Norway,
and he told the
Irish
people it was time to take the War
seriously and realise that the people of
Ireland were in
danger.
In the 6 Counties,
Artificially Partitioned from the
9 in the Ulster Province
and still under
British Government control they placed
a 6,000
tonne ship in Lough Neagh,
to house the IRA prisoners
there, while the Irish Government
had
also set up an Internment
Camp at the
Curragh in Co.
Kildare in Central Southern Leinster.
May 22nd:
In the
Irish Republic,
the Irish
Civic Guard, raided
Stephen Held's home, and discovered all of
Captain
Goertz's incriminating
material left there for safekeeping, together with
20,000
American Dollars, and
Stephen Held's excuse was
that he was unaware of it all, and
advised them he was only renting the room to a stranger, named
Brandy.
June:
Winston Spencer Churchill,
was now in as the
British
Prime Minister, as
Neville Chamberlain had
resigned, but was still in the
Cabinet, and knowing Winston
Churchill's disposition,
Eammon de Valera was now even more
wary of a British Government
invasion of Ireland.
In the
Irish Republic,
the German
Government's, spy operations network, sent over
another of their agents in the form of
Willy Prietz /
Paddy Mitchell, who they landed
at Dingle Bay in
Co. Cork in Southern Munster, from a
U Boat, and he made his way north to
Dublin in the north
- east of Southern Leinster,
were he rented a shop there, and immediately began
transmitting messages to
Germany every night for weeks, until he was also caught
and put in
Mountjoy Jail in Dublin.
June:
Thomas Mac Curtain,
was sentenced to death for shooting a
detective in Cork in
Co. Cork in Southern Munster,
but was reprieved by
Eammon de Valera.
June 12th:
Neville Chamberlain,
acting as a proxy for
Winston Churchill,
wrote to
Eammon de Valera
wanting to hold a meeting of the
Official Unionist
Stormont Government in the
6 Counties,
Artificially Partitioned from the
9 in the Ulster
Province, the Government of
Ireland, himself, and the
Dominion Secretary .
June 13th:
In the
Irish Republic,
the German Government, sent another of their agents to
Ireland,
known as
Walter Simon
/ Karl Anderson,
who made his way to Tralee
in Co. Kerry in the south - west of the
Munster Province, were he caught a train north to
Dublin,
under the observation of
3 Detectives, and was arrested on arrival in
Dublin,
where he was charged, and also put in
to Mountjoy
Jail, and where he was acknowledged and greeted warmly by
Willy Prietz,
much to his disgust.
June 20th:
Eduard Hemple,
the German Ambassador, met with
Eammon de Valera, as the
British Government forces had been
forced out of Norway, the Low
Countries and France,
while Italy
had joined in with the Germans,
and everything seemed to be going their way and Eamonn de Valera received
an assurance from him that
Ireland
would not be used for an attack on
England.
June 25th: France
was to succumb to the
German advance, and they were now face to face
with the British
Government, across the
English Channel. June 26th: The British Government, was trying to form a Defence Council of Britain, that would include the Irish Government, and the 6 Counties, Artificially Partitioned from the 9 in the Ulster Province, but could not get it off the ground, due to the intransigence of James Craig / Lord Craigavon, the Ascendancy Official Unionist Prime Minister in the 6 Counties, who wanted, "No discussion on Political Unity." To this end Malcolm Mac Donald, arrived in Dublin, and put forward the following proposals; "A Declaration by the United Kingdom Government for a United Ireland in principle, A joint body of Eire and the Stormont Government, Joint Defence Council of Eire and the Stormont Government, Eire to enter the War on the Allied side, and British Forces to be invited into Ireland, All German and Italian aliens to be interned, United Kingdom to provide all Military Equipment." Eammon de Valera said "No," which was based on the first item only, and reminded him of John Redmond's struggle with Irish Home Rule, and if the British Government wanted any of the others, then Irish Unity must be now, with no turning back or broken promises, as before, but Ireland would still remain neutral.
June 26th:
Stephen Held,
was found guilty and sentenced to
5 years
imprisonment, and
Mrs.
Iseult Stuart,
from Laragh Castle
in Co.
Wicklow in the south - east of Southern Leinster,
was also arrested on the possibility
of her purchasing the clothes for
Hermann Goertz /
Brandy in the first instance.
Captain Hermann
Goertz,
was now on his own, with no where else to go, and
was abandoned by the
IRA,
who he also felt that he was well rid of, with his only other contact
in Ireland
being
Mrs.
Stuart herself. He arrived
once more at Laragh were he found the
old
Republican stalwart,
Helena Moloney,
looking after the place, and was told of
Mrs.
Stuart's previous arrest,
and he hid out in the Wicklow Hills,
until he was picked up and taken to
Dublin,
and kept away from any contact with the
IRA, who now had no chance of any
agreement with the
Irish
Government.
