1504 AD Henry V11 the Welsh English King had Sir Leonard Grey carry out a wide spread campaign in Ireland against the Irish Septs of the O Connors in the Connacht Province, the O Carrolls of Ely in Co. Offaly in the north - west of Southern Leinster, the Mac Geoghegans from the "Southern" Ui Niaill in Northern Leinster, the O Malleys from the Ui Briuin in Co. Mayo in the mid - west of the Connacht Province,  the Cu Corb Ui Dunlainge O Tooles in the south - east of Southern Leinster and the Heberian Dal gCais Ui mBriain O Brians in Thomond / Northern Munster.

Conor / Conchobar Mac Dermot was the Heremonian Ui Cobhthaigh Dal Cuinn Ui Briuin King of Moylurg / Mag Luirc who had their territory in Co. Roscommon in the east of the Connacht Province.

Mac William Burke the Anglo - Irish Earl of Co. Tipperary in the north - east of the Munster Province asked Turlough "Don" O Brian with his Dalcassians, Mulroney O Carroll the Lord of Ely and his Cianachta Sept and many more from the Ormond Septs in Co. Tipperary to help him against his enemies and they went into battle at Knockdoe 8 miles west of Galway in Co. Galway in Southern Connacht were 2,000 of the Ormond troops were killed and this played further into the English hands weakening more of the Irish Septs.

Limerick in the mid - north - west of the Munster Province and the Dalcassians across the River Shannon in Co. Clare were observing their every move and anticipating the forthcoming attack on them. The Mac Namaras who where the Heberian Dal gCais Ui Caisin Lord Marshalls for the Ui mBriain Septs were backed up by Mac William Burke the the Anglo - Irish Earl of Clan Rickarde with his entire forces. Gerald “Mor” Fitz Gerald the leader of the English Military force had already destroyed the bridge near Portoroise across the River Shannon at Castle Connell on the boundary with Co. Clare so instead of waiting for the English forces to attack the Dalcassians went on the offensive and crossed the bridge to the north - east at Killaloe and proceeded down the eastern bank of the River Shannon to take the English force head on. This forced Gerald “Mor” Fitz Gerald the 8th Earl of Kildare to withdraw further south back towards Limerick where the battle was to continue all day until the English forces and their Irish allies were defeated. Gerald “Mor” Fitz Gerald nor his son Garrett Fitz Gerald who was to follow after him in the service of England were never ever to attack Co. Clare again.

A memorial to James Shortall who was descended from the original Soirteil or Seartal family who had arrived in Ireland in the 13th Century AD whose family had also become "More Irish then the Irish," was constructed by O Tunney at St. Canice's Cathedral in Kilkenny in Co.
