In England, Edward the Elder of Wessex (899 AD - 924 AD) the oldest surviving son of Alfred the Great began uniting the Anglo - Saxons against the Viking Danes who they defeated in Northumbria and also later gained the Southern Dane Law region south of the River Humber including London and Oxford. The Danish King of York, the Anglo - Saxon Lord of Bamburgh, the King of the Britons of Strathclyde, and the Heremonian Ui Conaire King of the Scots acknowledged him as their overall ruler. Elfward of Wessex (924 AD) the 2nd son of Edward the Elder was proclaimed King on July18th but died on August 2nd. Athelstan of Wessex - the Glorious  (925 AD - 939 AD another son of Edward the Elder who was his older half - brother became King who was to be the actual 1st King of all of England. and drove the Viking Danes out of York in 927 AD and gained control over Cornwall. (The Welsh Kings and Constantine 11 the Heremonian Ui Conaire King of Scotland submitted to him). In 937 AD his opponents under the Heremonian Ui Conaire King of Scotland, assisted by Olaf the Viking King of Dublin invaded England and the Battle of Brunanbugh occurred in which he was successful. Edmund of Wessex - the Magnificent (939 AD - 946 AD) was another 18 year old son of Edward the Elder from his 3rd Wife. In 939 AD he was besieged by Olaf "Guthfrithson" the Viking King of Dublin and in 940 AD Odo the Archbishop of Canterbury negotiated a peace treaty between them. In 941 AD Olaf the King of Dublin & York was killed in Northumbria and his cousin, Olaf "Sigtryggson" took over and in 943 AD Edmund besieged him and he was successful, and Olaf became a Christian, and Edmund then besieged Idwal the Welsh King  of Gwynedd who was in revolt there. In 944 AD Raghnall "Guthfrithson" besieged Olaf trying to become the Viking King of York instead, but Edmund dispelled them both and Olaf fled to Ireland to become the Viking King of Dublin and remained Edmund's ally. In 945 AD Edmund besieged the Brythonic kingdom of Strathclyde  and slew Donald Mac Donald who was the King there and made the first treaty with the new overlord Malcolm 1st the Heremonian Ui Conaire King of the Scots, that established the border between the two Countries, Scotland and England. With the peace monasteries sprung up across England under the auspices of Odo the Archbishop of Canterbury. Edmund was married to St. Elgiva who bore him 2 sons, Edwy and Edgar. Edmund the Magnificent was tragically killed when only 25 years of age and was buried at Glastonbury were he had recently appointed St. Dunstan as the Abbot. Edred of Wessex (946 AD - 955 AD) another 21 year old son of Edward the Elder from his 3rd wife was installed by the Witan, which caused the loss of allegiances in the north to Eric "Blood Axe" the Viking King of York. In 948 Edred went north and besieged the region there twice in Northumbria and eventually Eric "Blood Axe" left England altogether. Edwy / Edwig "All - Fair"  of Wessex (955 AD - 959 AD) who was installed at 14 years of age was the eldest son of Edmund the Magnificent who came into conflict with Odo the Archbishop of Canterbury and St. Dunstan. In 957 AD Mercia and Northumbria supported by Odo switched their allegiance to his brother, Edgar and England was partitioned, with Edwy controlling Wessex and Kent who would die when he was only 18 years of age, while Edgar gained control over the north. Edgar the Peaceful of Wessex (959 AD - 975 AD) the youngest son of Edmund the Magnificent had been reared as an orphaned child by St. Aethelwold a Benedictine monk and this coloured his outlook greatly and he recalled St. Dunstan from exile who became his advisor at the age of 16 years and in 961 AD he appointed St. Dunstan to the position of the Archbishop of Canterbury to reform the monastic movement as St. Benedict had laid out. Edgar besieged the north under Kenneth the Heremonian Ui Conaire King of the Scots, Malcolm the King of Strathclyde and Cumbria, Maccus the King of Man and the Western Isles, Iago the Welsh King of Gwynedd who all submitted. When he died in 975 AD he had been the first to rule over Mercia, Northumbria and Wessex. Edward the Martyr of Wessex (975 AD - 978 AD) was the oldest son of Edgar the Peaceful who began ruling in his teens and was stabbed to death by supporters of his half - brother. Ethelred the Unready of Wessex (979 AD - 1016 AD) another 13 year old son of Edgar the Peaceful who came up against the Viking Danes and their kinsmen the Viking Normans in France causing Pope John XV in 991 AD to draw up a peace treaty between England and Normandy. Despite this the Danes in the Battle of Maldon attacked the Anglo - Saxons who were defeated and Ethelred paid them a massive tribute (Danegeld) to try and maintain the peace, which they ignored and in 994 AD they attacked London and another even larger tribute was paid, but the attacks still continued with the Vikings continuing to operate out of the Isle of Wight.
