1000 BC - 900 BC
1000 B.C -
1000 AD There was to be
40,000 Ring
Forts counted throughout Ireland with
1,000 of
these situated in Co. Cork
in
Southern Munster
alone, which were basically the home sites of the people from this period in
time. They were known as raths - lios - duns - cahers or
cashels, which were
originally started in the Bronze Age and continued to be constructed up until
the Anglo - Norman Invasion in 1168 AD. They were surrounded with, from one to
four circular ramparts, such as at Staigue in Co.
Kerry in the south - west of Munster
and those on the Aran Islands off the west - coast of the
Connacht Province.
Another of these forts is the Grianan of Aileach in
Co. Donegal
in the north - west of the
Ulster Province, which was constructed up
until the year 100 BC on Mount Grianan
800’ high and Nuada the
Tuatha De Danann King was to be buried there as it was
previously an ancient tomb that had become a royal residence. Later on it was to to become,
at first, the main fortress of the Heremonian Dal Cuinn
"Northern" Ui Niaill Cenel
nEoghain Kings of Aileach and later taken
over by their kinsmen the "Northern" Ui Niaill Cenel
Conaill Sept under the
O Dohertys.
It would also be sacked by their other kinsmen the "Southern" Ui Niaill
who were expressing their overall authority at that time in
the
Ulster Province who were themselves
situated at their fortress at Tara in the
Midlands
- Mide -
Meath in Northern Leinster.
Later on again in 1101 AD it was also to be sacked by
107.Murtough
/ Muirchertach O
Brian who was
then the Heberian Dal gCais
-
Dalcassian
44th King of Munster
& 172nd King of
Ireland
while expressing his authority also over the "Northern"
Ui Niall Septs.
Other Ring Forts in - groups occur at
Tara
also in Co. Meath
in the south - east
of Northern Leinster, at
Cruachan
- Rath Croghan in
Co. Roscommon
in the east of
Connacht
and Eamhain Macha in
Co. Armagh
in the south - east of Ulster
while the Hill Forts are much larger as they were built more for
defensive
purposes such as that also at Eamhain Macha and at
Knock Aulin
near Kilcullen in Co. Kildare
in
Central Southern Leinster. South east of Old Castle in
Co. Meath
in the south - east
of Northern Leinster
is Hag's Mountain (Slieve na Calliagh) and Cairn Bawn Mountain, which are very
ancient burial grounds also where there are 30 Passage
Graves. One of these is believed to be the actual grave of
44.Eochaidh / Ollamh Fodhla
- The Law - Giver - the Irian 27th King of Tara - Erinn
who died in 1277 BC.
As the new metal, known now as
Iron, continued to be used the actual
Iron Age
evolved and it became more available on the Continent and this created turmoil in
the Aryan speaking races who then began to migrate from the south of Germany.
Included among these Aryan peoples were not only the Celts, but the
Teutonics of Northern Europe who had fair hair and fair skin and were
tall with blue eyes, who first made their appearance in Germany, Scandinavia and the Nether Lands.
(Among them were the Visi - Goths, the
Ostro - Goths and the Vandals who later became
the Germanic & Scandinavian races known as the Angles,
Jutes, Saxons,
Vikings and the Normans.)
The Teutonics did not come into Ireland
until the end of the 8th Century AD known then as the Vikings, which
up to then had given
Ireland
a continuing Celtic history of well over 2,000 years. The Celts on the
other hand were to arrive into
Ireland over a very prolonged period with the main players originally being
the Bactrians, the
Partholonians, the
Nemedh, the
Fir Bolg, the
Tuatha de Danann, the
Gaelic Milesians, the
Laigin and the
Cruithin Picts.
